Why April Counts:
April is my big sister, my only sister. She is 36 years old. April has taught us all to appreciate everyday.
Proudest Accomplishment:
Many years ago April won a medal in the Special Olympics.
Words of Wisdom:
Yikes. I am not sure that I have any. There was a time where April was incredibly violent. My mother and I had our hands more than full. If April had not been prescribed Lithium I am not sure if we would've made it through it sane. I am thankful to April and all that she has taught us. It has been a hard road for my Mom but April is her life and she loves her more everyday.
Personal Diagnosis Experience:
My mother began to notice that April's ability to hear was slowing down when April was 5 years old. Everyone told her everything was fine but my mother knew differently. April had been advanced in her cognitive abilities and then she just began to not be able to grasp new concepts. First they said it was a learning disability, then it was Autism. I remember people coming out to test for lead at one point. At the age of 9 my mother packed the car and went to Dallas, Tx (Scottish Rites) where my sister was diagnosed. I believe at that time they told my mother that April would not live to be 14 years old, did I mention that she is 36?
